Redfish Long Sleeve High Performance Fishing Shirt Story
A real “catch all” name for a species of gorgeous fish, the American redfish is a prize any fisher is proud to snag. This bull redfish beauty was captured when ReelSkinz CEO Krista Lewis and company professional Captain Chris Balseiro joined Captain Steve of Madness Charters in Jacksonville, Florida for an expedition like no other. On a calm, idyllic morning, four lines were cast with weights on the bottom, a leader, and mullet/crabs for bait. At first, the bite was a little slow, but Captain Steve had predicted the tide would soon turn—and he was right.
As the tide turned, the rods started screaming. Everyone on board caught at least two humongous bull reds each. The beautiful fish were caught one after the other, with the largest nearly 50 inches. The incredible images were caught in HD and were immediately earmarked as the feature photos for the new ReelSkinz redfish apparel line.
“I couldn’t believe the size of the Reds. Unbelievable. And great instincts by Captain Steve. We’ll definitely be back!” says Captain Chris Balseiro. In the US, redfish can include the red snapper, red drum, ocean perch, and Norway redfish. Most often attributed to deep-sea rockfish or fish that prefer calling reefs home, they’re highly sought after often for their taste and sheer size. Their unique colorings and patterns make them stand out, especially on your favorite fishing apparel.
Boasting unique characteristics, like a barbell-free chin, reflective copper-bronze body, freckling at the tail base, and oversized scales, redfish prefer to keep close to the mud or sand bottoms and are especially fond of spring-fed creeks and oyster bars depending on the species. As juveniles, redfish stay close to the inshore and can reach about 30 inches. At maturity, they migrate to the nearshore.
The redfish record for Florida was just over 52 pounds and was set in 1996 in Cocoa. As one of the state’s most beloved of sport fish, the redfish has become synonymous with Florida fishing. They’re also the region’s most popular estuarine fish, and a common tactic to catch them is by floating live shrimp below popping cork. Redfish adore mullet, pinfish, crabs, and killifish, so a soft-body jib, top-water plug, and spoons are all fantastic options to catch the eye of the redfish.
For many Floridians, a redfish is an in-demand table fish and there’s plenty of bounty to be had! Spawning season takes place from August through December, most commonly in lagoons, passes, and inlets all around the state. During this time, you’ll hear a drumming sound as they exercise muscles to rub against their bladder, which is how the name “red drum” was chosen.
